The Financialisation of Climate Change and Biodiversity: False Promises, Fake Solutions

Today’s climate and nature crises make the need for society’s overhaul clearer by the day. We cannot continue with “business as usual”, but that is exactly what is being offered by the narrow market-based remedies that are being pushed. From the financialisation of nature as natural capital to the goldrush for new carbon offsetting markets, an eruption of neoliberal solutions now dominates mainstream environmental politics.

This important session outlines the many problems with financialisation and argues that value systems which counter commodification are essential for inter-generational environmental sustainability.
